Q: What is a Carpool?
A: A carpool is an arrangement between two or more commuters to share the ride to work or school. The vehicle belongs to one of the members of the pool and arrangements about who drives and when are upon agreement of pool members. Costs, hours of departure and return, and a place to meet are also arranged by consent of carpool members. Go to Pools > Search to begin looking for carpool matches.
Q: Do I have to respond to carpool requests?
A: Not at all! Only create carpool posts if you're genuinely interested in connecting with others. If you don't want to be contacted for ridesharing, simply don't create any posts in the Pools section.
Q: What if I can't find any carpool matches?
A: Try adjusting your search settings! Expand your search radius, adjust departure times, or consider using a nearby park-and-ride location as your starting point. Sometimes small changes in timing or location can reveal new matches.
Q: Will other users be able to see my home address?
A: No. Your exact home address is never visible to other users. To protect your privacy, CommuteHub displays an anonymized location instead of your actual address. We recently improved how this works. Previously, we removed the street number and shifted the map pin, which could make the address and map location feel inconsistent. Our new approach keeps the displayed location much more accurate while still ensuring your exact address stays private.
This makes it easier for potential carpool partners to understand whether you're a good match without revealing where you live.
Once you've connected with someone, you can always agree on a pickup location that works for both of you, such as a nearby intersection, parking lot, or landmark. There's no need to share your exact home address unless you choose to.
Q: Is my car insurance affected by connecting with a carpooler?
A: Personal vehicle insurance is dependent upon your policy, but most insurers require passenger insurance coverage as part of any basic package. If you have any questions, check with your insurance provider prior to initiating any carpool. CommuteHub assumes no responsibility for insurance issues.
Q: What's the difference between carpooling and vanpooling?
A: Carpools typically involve 2-4 people sharing personal vehicles, with flexible arrangements between participants. Vanpools are formal arrangements for 5+ people using dedicated van services, often with scheduled routes and shared monthly costs.
Q: I’m having trouble finding a vanpool. Do you have any suggestions?
A: Be sure to use a specific destination address. The matching algorithm for vanpool looks at similar destination addresses within a one mile radius. By using a specific address, you assure that you are finding quality matches that will appeal to you and other members of the vanpool.
Q: What is the difference between Pools and Posts?
A: The Pools section is where you can find shared commuting opportunities, such as carpools, vanpools, and bikepools. Click the Pools icon in the navigation bar to browse available options.
Posts are the listings that make these connections possible. Each post describes what a commuter is looking for, such as a carpool partner or vanpool rider. If a post matches your needs, you can contact the person directly. You can also create your own post to find other commuters with a similar route or schedule.
